Masthead Ideas 2

This is my second set of possible magazine mastheads.

Masthead Ideas

These are ideas that I could use for the masthead of my school magazine.

I have chosen these fonts and styles because they maintain an exciting and sharp look. This could be used to attract the reader to the magazine. Another reason is to appeal to the needs and style of the students who would be buying the magazine.

Masthead Analysis

The masthead is generally the publisher/author etc. of the magazine, in this case, the masthead refers to the ESPN logo at the top of the cover.

This is the masthead of this magazine. It shows an aggressive font in the colour white. This will be match the rest of the articles theme and maintain a good colour scheme. The fact that the masthead is white showcases functionality along with an aggressive style, again, to follow the style of the magazine. It represents this type of magazine because it is aggressive, just like the topic of baseball shown in the magazine. It is shown on top of a dark blue background, meaning it stands out well. This is further backed up by the fact that the logo is in capital letters. All these points could indicate that the magazine is trying to maintain an 'American' style by having a bold attitude.  It is also shown behind the photograph to add emphasis to the photograph. It could also be noted that this is the same logo that is used consistently throughout types of media that ESPN are concerned with. In other words, ESPN only use this logo.

In this case, the masthead refers to the logo entitled 'Sport'

This is the masthead of the magazine, in a contrast to the previous example, it is calm. It stays in the background of the magazine cover and clearly displays the theme of the magazine. The font makes the reader think that it is a fairly 'laid back' magazine, with little excitement. This is also shown in the choice of colour. The connotations associated with white could be boring and bland. Despite this, the reason that this colour was chosen is to maintain a colour scheme on the cover of the magazine. We can see that the masthead is behind the photograph, as with the previous example, this could be to emphasise the photograph.

In this case the masthead is the logo entitled 'Empire'

This masthead shows an aggressive and intrusive style. It is in capital letters to emphasise and advertise the brand of magazine. The fact that the title is displayed in red also proves this. It is also in a bold and attractive font to bring attention to the magazine, which, over time could be used as a marketing scheme. As with the last two examples, the masthead is behind the photograph, most likely in an effort to attract focus to the photograph, which is probably related to the lead story, or, an important feature within the magazine.

Magazine Cover Analysis

Headline-
This will be the main headline of the magazine (950 BHP Soarer), in this case, a Japanese car. This is important as it tells the reader who or what is featured in the magazine. The text appears to be bold and in fluorescent colours, perhaps in an effort to entice the reader with such an impressive figure and to showcase an aggressive style, also backed up by the fact that the font is in italics.

Lead Story-
This will be the main story within the magazine. i.e. what people see first when buying the magazine. Will most be likely be related to the headline. Will most likely be big or controversial news. This shares the same fonts and colours as the headline as it shows details of the same level of importance and controversy.

Cover lines-
These are additional headlines featured down the side or at the bottom of the cover. In this case, more information about the topic of Japanese cars, which appears to be the topic of the magazine. Can also show more information, perhaps less important or less popular topics. This maintains the same colour scheme but is in smaller font. It is in the same colour as the magazine is again looking to maintain an aggressive style. It will be in a smaller font as it may not attract as many customers and it is clearly a less impressive statistic.

Masthead-
This will most likely be the name of the magazine. In this case, Banzai. This is obviously vital as readers will need to know the name of the magazine. This is the typical Banzai logo. It shows an aggressive and bold style, perhaps to match the cars featured in the magazine and what power they possess and the speed they are capable of. This is essential for the audience in question. The colour scheme for this area of the magazine cover is red and white. This will be because the topic of the magazine is about Japanese cars and the Japanese flag is Red and White.

Photograph-
This will be a photograph of the headline and/or the lead story. In this case, the photograph is of the ‘950 BHP Soarer’, the main topic featured in both the headline and the lead story. I know from my own knowledge that this is an impressive power level for a car of this size. The picture is fairly large, and covers the majority of the magazine cover, this will most likely be to attract more customers. The connotations of the photograph are powerful and fast. The magazine is related to the tuning of cars, shown by the fact that the engine is on display and the car appears to be in a garage. This will be to display the engine which possesses such an impressive statistic.

Why Have I Chosen To Study Media?

Why have I chosen to study media?

What do you think you will gain from taking media studies?

From studying media at this level I will hope to gain a knowledge of how media works ‘behind the scenes’ and the different forms of media that are shown to, or used by the general public. I will also aim to gain a knowledge of the effects of media on people. i.e. how different types of media can influence people. I am sure that the experience gained from this will help me later on in life, whether that be assisting or enhancing the development of a hobby/skill or lead to a new career path later on.

Do you have an interest in the media and how it works?

I have an interest in some aspects of media. This includes magazines about topics that I am interested in, such as sport and selected vehicle-orientated magazines. Another example is video games, I will regularly view advertisements for video games and analyse how an advertisement of a particular style can convince/influence people to buy the product. I do not watch movies that often however I have an understanding of the effects that movies have on people and how these can be explained to the viewer through the use of ‘director’s cuts’. I believe that these have a great and positive influence especially on those who perhaps do not show a great interest in media or the ideas behind the creation of the movie. I think that media is an interesting topic and I am sure that I will enjoy my time studying the subject.

How do you interact with media on a daily basis?

My main interaction with media comes in the form of video games, magazines and watching TV. During my time playing, reading and watching I have begun to develop an understanding of how and why people will be attracted to playing the games, reading the magazines or watching the TV show in question. I have a great interest in video games as they have had a constant presence as I have grown up. More recently I have begun to appreciate why people take to this form of media. I am aware of the techniques used by magazine companies in order to convince the reader that their magazine is the best on the market. In terms of watching TV, I have also begun to appreciate and understand the impacts of advertisement on viewers and how they convince people to invest in the product or service being offered.

Overall, I aim to learn a lot from taking media AS and I hope that it can enhance my skills for the future.
