Masthead Analysis

The masthead is generally the publisher/author etc. of the magazine, in this case, the masthead refers to the ESPN logo at the top of the cover.

This is the masthead of this magazine. It shows an aggressive font in the colour white. This will be match the rest of the articles theme and maintain a good colour scheme. The fact that the masthead is white showcases functionality along with an aggressive style, again, to follow the style of the magazine. It represents this type of magazine because it is aggressive, just like the topic of baseball shown in the magazine. It is shown on top of a dark blue background, meaning it stands out well. This is further backed up by the fact that the logo is in capital letters. All these points could indicate that the magazine is trying to maintain an 'American' style by having a bold attitude.  It is also shown behind the photograph to add emphasis to the photograph. It could also be noted that this is the same logo that is used consistently throughout types of media that ESPN are concerned with. In other words, ESPN only use this logo.

In this case, the masthead refers to the logo entitled 'Sport'

This is the masthead of the magazine, in a contrast to the previous example, it is calm. It stays in the background of the magazine cover and clearly displays the theme of the magazine. The font makes the reader think that it is a fairly 'laid back' magazine, with little excitement. This is also shown in the choice of colour. The connotations associated with white could be boring and bland. Despite this, the reason that this colour was chosen is to maintain a colour scheme on the cover of the magazine. We can see that the masthead is behind the photograph, as with the previous example, this could be to emphasise the photograph.

In this case the masthead is the logo entitled 'Empire'

This masthead shows an aggressive and intrusive style. It is in capital letters to emphasise and advertise the brand of magazine. The fact that the title is displayed in red also proves this. It is also in a bold and attractive font to bring attention to the magazine, which, over time could be used as a marketing scheme. As with the last two examples, the masthead is behind the photograph, most likely in an effort to attract focus to the photograph, which is probably related to the lead story, or, an important feature within the magazine.
